Kolomela:

Open cut iron ore

Problem: Kolomela started up in 2009 with a 9 m ton annual iron ore target. Startup was difficult, partly due to the requirement to employ locally. Many employees had no previous experience in mining.

Intervention: Staff were trained in Production Flow and implemented a War Room at the start of 2009.

Results: production volume started to increase, from 400 000 tons per month to 1 000 000 tons at the end of the year. In 2014 output reached 11.6 MT, almost 30% above design capacity. This exceptional performance attracted the attention of consultants and management of other mines. They were astonished by these results. The mine reached 12.1 m ton in 2015, 12.7 m ton in 2016 and 13.9 m ton in 2017.
