A SHARED MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
A practical starting point for a difficult discussion
Mining teams regularly face competing priorities: reduce costs, keep equipment productive, meet the plan and respond to disruption.
A decision can make sense for one department while creating difficulties elsewhere. The effects may only become apparent later, when tonnes are lost or the production plan becomes harder to deliver.
The simulation makes these interactions visible in a simplified mining operation. It gives people a shared experience from which to discuss the decisions, measures and trade-offs they encounter at work.
Questions worth exploring together:
• What is actually limiting the mine’s output?
• Which measures would guide your decisions?
• What would you want to understand before changing resources or targets?
THE FIVE-MINUTE DEMONSTRATION
You examine a mine with six connected operating stages and predict its output.
You then see how it performs over a simulated operating period, before comparing it with a different configuration exposed to the same sequence of disruptions.
The two scoreboards show how the operation looks through its cost measures and through its production flow and financial results.
What would you change—and why?
Take the discussion further with your management team
The demonstration introduces the questions. A facilitated session gives your team time to explore them together.
In a structured 40-minute management discussion, Stratflow uses the fuller simulation to examine choices about constraints, costs, utilisation and protective capacity: the capacity that helps an operation absorb disruption and recover.
Participants can compare their reasoning, examine the consequences and discuss where similar trade-offs arise in their own operation.
Bring operations, maintenance, technical services and finance into the same conversation. Where decisions involve budgets, performance measures or priorities across sites, involvement from the responsible COO or VP is particularly useful.
No advance preparation or operating data is required.
Start with the discussion. Refine it around your operation.
The first session helps identify which issues your team considers most relevant.
As further information and data become available, Stratflow can refine the simulation and presentation to explore those issues in greater detail.
The scope of any changes is agreed around the questions your team wants to investigate.
A SIMPLIFIED MINE. REAL MANAGEMENT QUESTIONS.
The starting model is a simplified open-cut iron ore operation, drawing on Theory of Constraints and production-flow principles.
Its purpose is to stimulate discussion about managing constraints and trade-offs in mining. Results illustrate the model’s assumptions; assessing your operation requires its own context and evidence.
